We will be welcoming artists James Star Come s Out and Marlena Myles for a robust conversation on the significance of creative expressions and oral traditions amongst Očhéthi Šakówiŋ c ultures\, the importance of the exhibition\, and the storytelling behind the included works. The panel will be moderated by NACDI's Communicatio ns Manager\, Em Matson-Brady.\n\nAhead of the panel\, artist Marlena Myl es will be leading a walk-through of the gallery\, guiding audience memb ers through each piece in the exhibition and the parts of the creation s tory they represent.\n\nSaturday\, June 14th\, 2-3:30pm at All My Relati ons Arts\, 1414 E. Franklin Ave. Minneapolis\nFood and beverages will be provided.\n\n \;\n\nAbout the panelists:\n\nMarlena Myles is a self -taught Native American (Spirit Lake Dakota/Mohegan/Muscogee) artist loc ated in St Paul\, Minnesota. Her art brings modernity to Indigenous hist ory\, languages and oral traditions while using the land as a teacher. G rowing up on her traditional Dakota homelands here in the Twin Cities\, she enjoys using her artwork to teach Minnesotans of all backgrounds the Indigenous history of this place we call home.\n\nHer professional work includes children’s books\, augmented reality\, murals\, fabrics\, an imations and has shown her work in fine art galleries such as the Minnea polis Institute of Art\, The Museum of Russian Art\, Red Cloud Heritage Center and the Minnesota Museum of American Art\, to name a few. Her fir st permanent site-specific augmented reality public art installation\, k nown as the Dakota Spirit Walk\, is available on the Revelo AR app.\n\nI n 2021\, she opened her own Dakota publishing company called Wíyouŋki hipi (We Are Capable) Productions to create a platform that educates an d honors the culture\, language and history of Dakota people.\n\n \; \n\nFor nearly thirty years\, James Star Comes Out (Oglala Lakota) has b een creating a variety of artwork related to the horse.  Since his yout h\, he was fascinated and intrigued by the horse\, which is highly honor ed and cherished among all tribes within the Oceti Sakowin\, or the Grea t Sioux Nation.\n\nOver the course of his career\, Star Comes Out has re ceived numerous accolades for his artwork.  His awards include a Best o f Show and multiple First and Second Place ribbons at the Northern Plain s Indian Art Market (Sioux Falls\, South Dakota)\, and a First Place at the Red Cloud Art Show (Pine Ridge\, South Dakota).  His work is includ ed in several museum and other collections in the United States: Minneso ta Historical Society\, St. Paul\, Minnesota\; Atka Lakota Museum\, Cham berlain\, South Dakota\; Red Cloud Heritage Center\, Pine Ridge\, South Dakota\; Washington Pavilion Visual Arts Center\, Sioux Falls\, South D akota\; and the Ford Foundation\, New York\, New York.\n\nFor more on t he artists and exhibition\, visit the exhibition page HERE.
