MINNEAPOLIS (April 17th, 2024) All My Relations Arts and the Native American Community Development Institute are proud to present AL·TER·NA·TIVE* by Frank Buffalo Hyde.
AL·TER·NA·TIVE is a solo exhibition featuring a collection of paintings and sculptures from multimedia artist Frank Buffalo Hyde (Onondaga/Niimíipuu (Nez Perce). Sardonic, vivid and pop-culture saturated, his work reflects on the commodification of American Indian culture, and the assertive roles of Native American identity in the contemporary world. Self-proclaimed as consciously, culturally non-transactional, Frank’s work comments on cultural appropriation and societal disruption through his uncompromising satirical eye.
A defiant take on the skewed perceptions of Native American art and culture tourism, Frank’s allegorical work is geared towards Native people first and disarms through banter. Through overlapping concepts including irreverent Pop-Surrealist paintings, buffalo fur triptychs, paper mache sculptures, found objects and repurposed installations, Frank makes references to antiquated technology in conversation with the metaverse. Through humorous musings on what we elevate as a society, what we agree is valuable as a society, and our unbreakable ties to our devices, Frank’s work provides a layered commentary on the collective unconscious of the 21st century.
This exhibition marks an opportunity for the Twin Cities to get to know Frank Buffalo Hyde and an opportunity for the artist to introduce himself and his work to the community. “What you see is what you get when it comes to me and my art. I pull no punches.” – Frank Buffalo Hyde.

All My Relations Arts (AMRA) operates the All My Relations Arts Gallery, Minnesota’s premier American Indian owned and operated contemporary fine arts gallery. Located on Franklin Avenue in Minneapolis, the gallery resides within the heart of the American Indian Cultural Corridor. AMRA presents fine art exhibits throughout the year, as well as hosting tours, presentations, and programs.
The focus of AMRA is to provide the people of the Twin Cities, greater Minnesota, and beyond consistently high-quality exposure to Native American fine arts.
