Ray Janis is a contemporary artist based in Mni Luzahan (Rapid City, SD), blending pop culture with a Lakota perspective. His work explores identity, history, and memory through a mix of digital design, sketching, spray paint, markers, and acrylic on canvas.
Art has always been a part of who he is. He grew up drawing and found that creating helped him process the world around me. Today, his practice is both intentional and intuitive. Sometimes he begins with a clear vision, other times he lets the paint flow and see what God reveals.
Inspired by design, video games, history, and Native humor, he aims to spark connection, nostalgia, and a sense of belonging through his work. Whether he’s creating a digital illustration or painting on a large scale, each piece reflects a journey, personally, and culturally.
He blends modern design with traditional Lakota symbolism, street art energy, and deep cultural roots. Ray was raised on strong family values and influenced by local artists, and started creating visual art as a way to represent Native identity in modern spaces.
Ray’s current portfolio includes digital design, logo work, murals, and educational graphics; with projects created for Native nonprofits, youth programs, and public art spaces. In 2025, he was honored to be selected as a First Peoples Fund Fellow for leadership in Indigenous art.
Through his practice, Ray stays committed to cultural preservation, visual sovereignty, and creating platforms for Native youth to express themselves.
