ABOUT THE NATIVE AUTHORS PROGRAM:
All My Relations Arts’ Native Authors Program has supported all aspects of the development of Native authors in genres of fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, children’s fiction, and young adult fiction. Through a cohort model, the program benefits Native authors through mentorship and facilitation by an established Native American author. This year’s facilitator will mentor the fourth cohort on the genre of screenwriting. With the eminent rise of Native representation screenwriters in film, theater, and television, it has never been a better time to honor and hone this writing practice.

The Native Authors Program facilitator will curate and develop a 12-month intensive focusing on professional development topics including preparing a script, working with an editor, developing a pitch, the drafting process, scene development, the business of writing, and more. Authors will meet monthly as a group with the program facilitator for peer reviews and dialogue that establishes a disciplined, dedicated commitment to their writing.
Mentor authors will be invited to meet with the cohort during their monthly meetings to offer sage advice and facilitate the transfer of knowledge from established authors to the cohort members. The facilitator will also invite experienced guest speakers from the writing field to meet with the authors as part of their participation in the cohort. These guests will include representatives who can inform the cohort members on how to apply for financial support and advance their professional development. The facilitator will manage the program to achieve an overall goal of being pitch-ready, with a focus on managing expectations and outcomes, fostering respectful critique and cultural awareness among writers, and securing funding for applications.
