Curated by mixed media artist Ray Janis, Sakowin Synergy is a dynamic and innovative group exhibition that brings together the powerful and diverse works of four contemporary artists: Ray “Rock Boy” Janis, Sheldon Starr, Jim Yellow Hawk, and Dwayne “Chuck” Wilcox. The title itself is a statement of cultural identity and artistic connection. “Sakowin” is a reference to the Oceti Sakowin—The Seven Council Fires—acknowledging the collective heritage and spirit that informs and grounds their art. “Synergy,” speaks directly to the collaborative energy and mutual inspiration that defines this project, representing a concerted effort to propel their shared Native art forms into new spheres.
This exhibition is woven together with deep respect for tradition and a bold embrace of modernity. The artists—particularly Ray Janis and Sheldon Starr—draw vital inspiration from artists who came before them, specifically citing the foundational influence of Jim Yellow Hawk and Dwayne Wilcox. Building upon this rich legacy, the artists employ vibrant colors and develop new interpretations of traditional motifs and narratives.
Utilizing a striking array of media, including contemporary digital design techniques, traditional ledger paper, industrial materials like aluminum, and integrated lighting elements, the artists in Sakowin Synergy blend innovation, collaboration and a sharing of artistic experience. By merging their individual styles and perspectives across generational lines, the artists create something truly unique and resonant. This multigenerational dialogue and vision offers viewers an engaging and fresh experience with contemporary Indigenous art, challenging expectations and highlighting the continuous evolution of artistic expression within the Oceti Sakowin Oyate.
Symbolism in the Exhibition:
The identity of Sakowin Synergy is further reinforced by the exhibition’s logo. The emblem is centered around seven distinct buffalo horns. This motif serves a dual purpose, simultaneously honoring the Pte’ Oyate (the Buffalo Nation), which is sacred to the Lakota/Dakota people, and explicitly representing the Oceti Sakowin. The seven horns encircle the Lakota Star, a symbol of guidance and aspiration. Together, these elements powerfully convey the core values of the exhibition: unity, genuine collaboration, and the principle of being a good relative.
